A Balm for the Long Road
Caravans traveled through the harshest terrains, across deserts, cold mountains, and winding paths. In winter, when the wind would freeze skin and stiffen bones, this warming balm became a trusted companion for travelers.
Made from ginger - known for its warming and circulation-stimulating properties - and clove, the strongest of warming spices, this balm was applied to sore joints, stiff backs, and chest congestion.
It became an essential part of the caravan medicine chest, where the women would rub it into their hands and feet to keep them warm, and over their lungs to release tight breath. Heat, warmth, and ease of circulation were the goals.
This balm honored the strength of the body and the movement of the heart.
Ingredients (makes 30 ml - one small jar)
-
15 ml Jojoba Oil (or Olive Oil)
Substitute: grapeseed, avocado, or sesame oil -
6 g Beeswax Pastilles
(raw chunk option - see note below) -
10 drops Ginger Essential Oil
Known for warming, circulation-boosting, and pain-relieving properties -
5 drops Clove Essential Oil
For heat, joint relief, and stimulating circulation -

1-2 drops Black Pepper Essential Oil (for extra warmth and circulation)

Method
-
In a double boiler or heat-safe container, combine jojoba oil and beeswax.

Remove from heat, and add ginger & clove essential oils. Stir well.
-
Pour into a jar or tin while still warm.

Allow to cool completely and set before sealing.
Beeswax Note (Pellets vs. Raw Chunk)
-
Pellets (pastilles): use 6 gm
-
Raw chunks: measure a walnut-sized piece (approx. 6 gm), or grate it for accuracy
-
Raw beeswax will create a stronger scent and a firmer balm.
To make the balm softer, reduce beeswax to 5 gm
To make it firmer, increase beeswax to 7 gm
