The Essential Remedy of the Road

Caravan life wasn’t gentle on the skin. Long days, hard winds, sunburns, and the constant work of moving carried tolls on hands and bodies.
This salve, crafted from beeswax and honey, was made for protection, not just beauty.
Honey, with its natural antimicrobial properties, helped heal wounds. Beeswax formed a protective barrier against the elements, sealing in moisture and keeping the body safe from abrasions. Together, they made a balm that mended the skin, protected it, and allowed it to breathe.

This recipe was passed down as the "caravan’s cure-all."

Ingredients (makes 30 ml - one small jar)

• 12 ml Olive Oil (or Sweet Almond Oil)
  Substitute: jojoba, avocado, or grapeseed oil

• 6 g Beeswax Pastilles
  (raw chunk option - see note below)

• 12 ml Honey (raw, unfiltered)
  Ancient caravans used raw honey to heal and soothe skin.

• 2-3 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  Optional: calming and healing properties; can substitute with chamomile or calendula

• Optional

  • 1-2 drops Vitamin E oil (antioxidant & skin repair)

 

Method

1. In a double boiler or heat-safe container, combine olive oil and beeswax.

2. Gently heat over simmering water until fully melted. Do not boil.

3. Remove from heat and stir in the honey, allowing it to melt into the oils.

4. Add your essential oils (if using) and stir well.

5. Pour into your jar or tin while still warm. Allow it to cool and set completely before sealing.

 

Beeswax Note (Pellets vs. Raw Chunk)

• Pellets (pastilles): use 6 gm

• Raw chunks: measure a walnut-sized piece (approx. 6 gm), or grate for accuracy

• Raw beeswax will have a slightly stronger scent and firmer texture.

To make the salve softer, reduce beeswax to 5 gm.
To make it firmer, increase beeswax to 7 gm.

 

How to Use

• Apply generously to hands, feet, or any dry, cracked areas.
• Reapply throughout the day as needed, especially in dry or harsh conditions.
• Excellent for minor burns (use cold compress to cool first, then apply)
• Keep in a travel pouch for quick access.

 

Shelf Life

• 6-12 months
Store tightly closed, in a cool, dry place. Keep away from heat or sunlight.
