• Dried leaf powder (untreated deciduous leaf) - ½ tsp
• Sandalwood powder - ¼ tsp
Use true roasted tea only.
No flavoured blends.
No essential oils.
TOOLS REQUIRED
• Stone mortar and pestle
• Fine mesh sieve
• Ceramic or glass mixing bowl
• Measuring spoons
• Distilled water
• Wooden board or tray
• Baking paper or unbleached cloth
• Damp cloth
• Airtight storage container
PREPARATION
Grinding the Tea
Place roasted tea leaves into the mortar.
Grind slowly until very fine.
Sift through a fine mesh sieve.
Return coarse fragments to the mortar and repeat.
Roasted tea burns most evenly when finely powdered.
DRY BLENDING
Combine in a bowl:
• Roasted tea powder
• Dried leaf powder
• Sandalwood powder
• Makko powder
Mix thoroughly until completely uniform.
The blend should be warm brown with a soft, dry texture.
ADDING WATER
Add distilled water drop by drop, mixing gently.
The dough should become:
• Soft
• Flexible
• Slightly warm to the touch
• Not sticky
Tea-based blends absorb water steadily - avoid rushing.
RESTING THE DOUGH
Cover with a damp cloth.
Rest for 10-15 minutes.
This ensures smooth binding and a calm burn.
HAND-ROLLING
Pinch a small amount of dough.
Roll gently into thin ropes:
• 2-3 mm thick
• 8-10 cm long
Pressure should be even and unhurried.
Night Tea should feel settled and complete in the hand.
If small cracks appear, lightly dampen fingertips and smooth gently.
Do not overwork - restraint keeps the smoke soft.
DRYING
Lay sticks on baking paper or cloth.
Dry in a shaded, quiet space:
• No sunlight
• No artificial heat
Drying time: 4-6 days.
Turn once daily.
CURING
Once fully dry, store in an airtight container for 3-4 weeks.
This mellows the roasted note and smooths the finish.
HOW TO BURN
• Burn on a mica plate or ash bed
• Break into shorter pieces if desired
• Best burned in the evening, after dinner or before sleep
This incense supports closure, not stimulation.
