A Shield for the Traveller’s Skin & Spirit
Along trade routes, caravan members used resin balms not just for wounds, but for protection. Frankincense sealed the skin against dry winds and desert cold. Heavy fats formed a barrier. Honey guarded wounds and softened irritation.
But honey was not used sweet - it was darkened by smoke from heated resins, turning amber and strong.
A balm like this protected the face, the chest, and the space around the person who wore it.
This shield balm honors that tradition.
It keeps the skin from cracking in harsh climates and keeps your energy intact in crowded places.
Ingredients (30 ml ritual jar)
Base Oils:
-
10 ml Sesame Oil (warming, ancient skin protector)
-
5 ml Jojoba Oil (balances, prevents greasiness)
Solidifiers:
-
3 gm Beeswax
-
2 gm Tallow (optional but recommended)
adds barrier strength + historical authenticity
(If omitting tallow, increase beeswax to 4.5 gm)
Binders & Resin:
-
¼ tsp Frankincense Resin Paste (see method below)
-
½ tsp Black Honey (very small, for stability + healing)
Aromatic Boundary (Minimal Dose):
-
1 drop Frankincense Essential Oil
-
1 drop Patchouli (micro dose only - stabilizing + grounding)
Never add more than 2 drops total.
This is not perfume - it is a shield.
Frankincense Resin Paste (Traditional Method)
-
Crush a small piece (pea sized) of frankincense resin.
-
Place in a heat-safe cup over simmering water.
-
Add ½ tsp sesame oil and melt VERY gently for 10-15 minutes.
-
Strain with muslin if you prefer a smooth balm, or leave tiny particles for authenticity.
This paste behaves like medicine + scent + protective wax.
The Honey Note
Use raw dark honey or a drop of molasses-colored honey (if available).
Avoid bright yellow supermarket honey.
Honey should be seen as an antimicrobial protector, not a sweetener.
Method
-
Combine base oils + beeswax + tallow (if using) in a bain-marie.
-
Melt gently - do not boil.
-
Add frankincense resin paste + honey, stir to dissolve.
-
Remove from heat.
-
Add maximum 2 drops total of essential oils.
-
Pour into jar. Cool fully before sealing.
