The Traveller’s Blood

There are roads that steal warmth from the limbs. Cold wind in mountain passes,
hours of sitting in trains and carriages, long stretches of walking on tired feet.

The spirit might be willing, but the hands grow numb, the chest feels slow,
and movement becomes effort instead of flow. This tincture was made for those days -
when the body needs its fire rekindled so the journey can continue with strength.

The Caravan Ember Tincture

Circulation • Warmth • Moving Vitality

Old-World Origin

Across colder trade routes - the Atlas foothills, Pyrenean crossings, the Alpine borders -

travellers used warming infusions to keep the blood moving:

  • Cinnamon for inner fire

  • Cardamom to expand circulation

  • Ginger to stimulate movement

  • Star anise or fennel for breath and flow

  • Cayenne in tiny pinches for weary limbs

These blends were sipped at inns and shared beside smoky braziers, often brewed in small

metal cups designed to heat quickly over coal. This formula honours those fire-keepers of the road.

Ingredients (120 ml)

Warming Spice Blend
✶ ½ cinnamon stick (broken)
✶ ½ tsp cracked cardamom pods
✶ ¼ tsp grated fresh ginger or 1 pinch dried
✶ 1 star anise (whole)
✶ A pinch (⅛ tsp or less) cayenne or chili flakes
✶ Thin peel of ¼ orange (for breath + ease)

Alcohol Base
✶ 150 ml spiced rum (aged, not sweet)
-or-
✶ 150 ml Armagnac or dark brandy

Non-Alcoholic Base
✶ Raw apple cider vinegar (the mother)
✶ ½ tsp honey (optional, for roundness)

The Preparation

Break cinnamon and crush cardamom pods gently. Place spices, citrus peel, and ginger into a clean jar.

Pour rum/Armagnac (or vinegar mix) until spices are submerged.
Seal and wrap the jar with warm red or terracotta cloth -

caravan healers believed circulation blends should “sleep in warmth.”

Steep in a dark place for 18-21 days only (warming spices can overpower).
Shake gently every 2-3 days. Strain through muslin and bottle in amber glass.
Mark with a small spark symbol or ember dot.

How to Use

✶ 2-3 drops under the tongue before walking or cold weather
✶ 4 drops in warm tea after long travel days
✶ 1 drop rubbed into palms (inhale warmth deeply)
✶ 3 drops in warm water before bed for circulation

Symbolism

✶ Cinnamon - stable internal fire
✶ Cardamom - expanding breath and blood flow
✶ Ginger - movement, stamina, spark of action
✶ Star Anise - breath-warming circulation + clarity
✶ Cayenne/Chili - micro-fire, releasing stagnation
✶ Orange Peel - uplifting movement without strain
✶ Spiced Rum/Armagnac - aged warmth from the earth

Intention

"May my body move with warmth,
the blood flow with ease,
and the journey meet me with energy instead of effort."

Author’s Note

This tincture came from cold nights in winter travel,
when the road continued but my limbs lagged behind.
It remains an ember I carry with me.
